What is Trump doing to Tech and Science?

This concerns me. I hadn’t realized that Trump has all but ignored the Office for Science and Technology Policy. Add that to the facts that just about the whole administration doesn’t believe in climate change and his Secretary of the treasury , Steven Mnuchin, is clueless about the affect of automation on jobs and it shows why we will very likely have dark days coming for tech in the US. The US has been at the forefront of tech and science for a very long time. With thinking like this we will loose that edge. It seems to me this administration is doing everything it can to try to kill our lead in tech and science while trying to bring back jobs in areas that are dying or won’t support them. I can only pray that when Trump realizes how vital it is for us to have a strong base in Science and Tech it won’t be too late to undo what he has done.

Skip the Fast Food

Do you watch a lot of TV and think that fast food is a good alternative?  Well you are not alone according to a the recent study Heavy TV watching leads to unhealthy perceptions of fast food health risks.

If you are in that group then let me make it easy for you, most fast food is not very good for you.  It is either high in sodium, fat or sugar.

It can be difficult to eat on the run but there are several options out there. For instance if you must have fast food try a salad.  Skip the high calorie dressing and go with the lite italian.  Toss the croutons and most of the cheese to help keep useless calories and fat down.  Another good choice is the Oven Roasted Chicken Sub at Subway on the 9 grain wheat (not the honey wheat).  Top that with all the fresh veggies and skip the sauces and you have a home run.

Another  option for a healthy lunch is something I have started doing recently when needed.  Find a grocery store and hit the produce aisle.  For about what you would pay for that value meal you can get several filling servings of fruit and vegetables.    They will give you most of the micronutrients you need for the day and will fill you up nicely.  Add the fact that there is no added sugar or salt and you have a home run.

Tim Cook, Apple and changing the truth

Update: Heard back from the Author and Apple did the right thing. They allowed in her original book with all the links. Apple you just restored my faith in you. For those of you not familiar with the commercial I am referring too here it is..

Original Post follows

Below is an email I sent to Tim Cook today about making authors change their content for the iBookstore just because they name a competitor. Please follow the links in the email for all the details.

Dear Mr. Cook,

Earlier today I read the articles linked below and thought about the 1984 Apple Superbowl commercial that it is so well remembered for. The idea conveyed of breaking out of the mold and not being controlled by big brother is a feeling that still resonates very well today. However, as I read the articles, I thought that should it be true ,Apple is clearly not the one throwing the hammer but instead the force that is causing the hammer to be thrown in the first place. I truely hope that this action was an oversight by a poorly trained reviewer rather than some sort of company policy that promotes the limiting of expression and education to the masses. Because if it is, I as well as many others will have a very hard time ever trusting any book or literary material obtained from the iBookstore or Apple for that matter in fear that it has in some way been stripped of a competitors information simply because they are a competitor. Please assuage my fears and tell me that this is not the case and that knowledge will not be stifled simply to prevent competition.

Apple Made Its Decision, Now its My Turn?

I would like to mention in closing that I am writing this on a Mac Mini and am seriously considering developing for iOS. As a result I do feel somewhat connected to the issue. I also have no connection to the writer of the articles but rather felt the need to say something because of the apparent disservice being done to her work and to potentially the works of others.

Sincerely,
George

Amazon cuts affiliate ties in more states over taxes | Digital Media – CNET News

I think the issue for most states in regards to getting sales is getting what they are due and need. In my home state you are suppose to (by law) pay use tax on all purchases made out of state unless you pay sales tax in the state where you bought the item. I’ll be willing to bet that most states in the US have the same laws. What is happening is that people are buying online to “save” the tax they are supposed to be paying anyway but are not. As a result the tax coffers are smaller and services get cut. Thus this affects the people not paying their fair share by reducing services that they need. Yes some of the stuff cut is junk but many places are loosing police and other necessary services. Just look at Minnesota. They are facing a full shutdown on June 30th because of a huge shortfall. BTW I unlike many, report my use tax on out of state online purchases and pay it when I do my states taxes every year. Thus I pay my fair share.

So why do we fight paying for something we need and want? That being better services for us and ours.

Update 03/26/17

A lot has changed since I wrote this in 2011. According to Forbes Amazon will soon be collecting sales tax in most states that require it.  The only exceptions being Alaska, Delaware, Oregon, Montana, or New Hampshire.  These states don’t currently collect sales tax.
